Last month, the Allen County Public Library celebrated National Inventors’ Day with a grand opening celebration of The Studio at Main. The Studio at Main is both a rebrand and an expansion of the Main Branch’s Maker Lab—the library’s creative space open to makers of all kinds.
The Studio (which is also available at other select Allen County Public Library locations) offers a variety of equipment and technology for makers at all stages of learning. And since The Studio is a free community resource, it lowers barriers to entry for beginners and dabblers. Experiment to your heart’s content at no expense, though some equipment requires a library card to reserve. Looking to get into podcasting? Have a teen who wants to learn how to use Photoshop? Want to collaborate with other creatives? The Studio is the spot for all of the above and more.
A notable addition to The Studio’s expansion is a sound recording booth, which can be used for podcasting, vocals, and even instrumentals (the booth’s equipped with a keyboard and GarageBand). Record inside the booth, then edit outside the booth, at one of The Studio’s computers. Currently, the booth is walk-in only, so you’ll want to give yourself plenty of time, in case it’s occupied.
Another perk is The Studio’s knowledgeable staff and workshop offerings. The Studio’s programming includes a robust class schedule that teaches everything from coding to 3D printing. They even offer VR experiences. Classes are designed for a range of ages, all the way up to adulthood. And the best part is, all of the workshops are free with your library card. You can see the schedule of classes here. Classes often fill up fast, so if you see something that sparks an interest, jump on it!
The Studio’s expansion is part of the Allen County Public Library’s 2024-2028 strategic plan, which emphasizes life-long learning and discovery. Support for the project came from the Don Wood Foundation, a regional coalition with a mission to advance postsecondary education and training.
