Right outside of the 99 blocks, you’ll find a row of local businesses on Broadway who fit so well together that they’ve naturally become a district all their own. The Broadway Arts District is a collective of the street’s resident artists, creatives, and curators who, wanting to build a greater sense of community around Broadway, began throwing events, like the Broadway Street Stroll and Art on Broadway.
Over the years, the events grew, and so did the surrounding neighborhoods—giving the Broadway businesses a reason to host more regular gatherings. Now, every first Friday of the month, these businesses come together to host a plethora of pop-ups, transforming Broadway itself into an event, where you can stroll around and enjoy all things art-tastic, including:
Art exhibits, open galleries, and artist meet-and-greets: At First Friday, local galleries and businesses open their doors to showcase the work of Fort Wayne’s finest artists. This is a great opportunity to meet local creatives, get to know their work, and even purchase unique pieces to take home.
Studio tours: Broadway is home to many of the city’s most talented artists. During First Fridays, many artists will open their private studios to the public, displaying their artwork and giving you a glimpse into their creative spaces and processes.
Live arts-in-motion and music: At First Fridays, creativity fills the air. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for live performances from musicians, painters, sculptors, poets, and more.
Special culinary experiences: All your senses will be stimulated at First Fridays. Grab tastes at the hors d’oeuvres stations featured at many of the pop-ups, visit a food truck, or check out the street’s many dining and drink options.
Interactive activities: Channel your inner artist and get involved in one of First Friday’s hands-on activities in an encouraging, non-judgemental environment.
There are so many opportunities to sip, gawk, dine, and shop your way through everything the Broadway Arts District has to offer. Whether you’re an artist yourself, an enthusiast, or just looking for a fun night out with friends, First Fridays have something for everyone.
Sure, it’s a good time. But more importantly, First Fridays offer a chance to connect with small business owners, with local creatives, and with our neighbors. So while you’re enjoying the festivities, get out of your comfort zone and strike up a conversation with other attendees and artists. You never know where the night or the conversations will take you!
