This year, the Grand Wayne Convention Center (GWCC) celebrates 40 remarkable years of service. What began in 1985 as a hopeful endeavor by city leaders to give Downtown a “boost,” has since racked up multiple national awards, brightened our cityscape, and brought millions of dollars to the local economy each year.
It’s difficult to exactly measure the impact the GWCC has on the community—there’s no way to perfectly track the foot traffic and spending of its visitors, but it’s safe to say that it’s been a major success story for Downtown Fort Wayne (and beyond).
Here are just some ways the GWCC has contributed to the vibrancy of DTFW:
The Evolution of a Landmark
Driving down Jefferson, it’s impossible to miss the convention center. It’s a modern spectacle, with its striking stone and glass walls. Inside, you’ll find stunning terrazzo flooring, high-peaked ceilings, and tons of natural light. With brightlit, beautiful public spaces and a variety of fully equipped, customizable private event spaces, it’s no wonder that the GWCC lands over 325 events yearly.
Much of the beauty and functionality found at the GWCC today came from a 26-million-dollar expansion in the early aughts, which spanned the venue across 225,000 square feet and made possible additional in-house services, capabilities, and professionally trained staff.
In addition to more significant transformations, the GWCC is always making improvements to meet the evolving needs of event planners and attendees. The building itself has come a long way since its ribbon-cutting in 1985 (which—fun fact—featured a performance from late Grammy winner Tony Bennett), and continues to get better every year.
An Added Bustle
The GWCC boasts an impressive rebooking rate of 80%, making Downtown a destination for people from all over the country. That impact extends far beyond its own walls. Bringing visitors Downtown brings foot traffic to surrounding restaurants, pubs, shops, hotels, museums, and entertainment venues. It’s estimated to bring in $10+ million to local businesses every year.
This boost is especially important to those in the hospitality and retail industries, which are known for tight margins. A flurry of tourists in town for a convention can make a server’s night.
Building Connection
In addition to the bump in business and the beautification GWCC lends to our urban landscape, the venue serves as a bridge for connection—whether that be through a networking opportunity for professionals or a gathering space for those with likeminded interests. This is at the heart of the GWCC’s ultimate mission and is exactly what its creators had hoped for when they floated the idea over four decades ago.
The 40th anniversary of the Grand Wayne Convention Center is a celebration of its past achievements and a testament to its ongoing dedication to serving Fort Wayne. The Grand Wayne Convention Center stands as a pillar of hospitality, bringing people together and enriching the city’s cultural and economic landscape.
Here’s to many more decades of beauty, community, and memories-in-the-making!
