But lately, it feels like there’s always something new to check out in our local arts scene. And if you’re looking for something out of the ordinary, Downtown is the perfect place to get inspired.
From immersive theatrical experiences to new murals going up in real time, there are so many unique arts experiences to explore. Whether you're looking for a night out, a family outing, or a way to explore your own creative side, here are eight unique arts experiences you can only find Downtown:
1. Art This Way Fest
It’s a big year for Art This Way. The program that's spent the last decade turning Downtown into a canvas is celebrating its 10th anniversary with its first-ever two-day festival. On October 2nd and 3rd, along Broadway, expect a fine art fair, fashion show, silent disco, live art demos, mural dedications, buskers, food trucks, and a main stage lineup—featuring free performances from regional artists and national headliners, Tank and the Bangas and The Strumbellas. It's the ultimate love letter to public art and our mighty local arts community.
2. Bedtime Stories Theatre
Tucked inside The Landing, Bedtime Stories Theatre is unlike any show you've seen: you walk up to a hidden door, take an elevator, and step into a massive magical blanket fort. From there, you choose a "team," settle in for some food, and watch (and participate in) a series of interactive short plays pulled from classic stories and folklore. Each play unfolds differently based on audience decisions, much like a choose-your-own-adventure story. There's a family-friendly version and a comedic, adults-only spin-off. Either way, every show is playful, communal, and genuinely one-of-a-kind.
3. Broken Pencil Improv
Broken Pencil is a seasoned improv comedy troupe that has been making it up as they go since 2017. And their unscripted shows have become a Downtown staple (many performed at Fort Wayne Cinema Center). Expect fast, funny, made-on-the-spot scenes built entirely from audience suggestions. Whether you’re an improv regular or if you've never seen improv live, this is a great low-key place to enjoy the art of comedy.
4. The Dinner Detective

Part dinner, part whodunit: The Dinner Detective is an interactive murder mystery show held at the Courtyard by Marriott. The twist? The actors aren't in costume. They're planted in the audience, so the "suspect" sitting next to you might really be in on it. Tickets include a multi-course meal, making it a fun date-night or group outing that blends theatrics with a little bit of detective work.
5. Fort Wayne Public Art Trail

You won’t need a ticket for this one. With more than 150 murals and sculptures scattered across the city (a huge concentration of them Downtown, thanks in large part to Art This Way), the Public Art Trail turns a simple walk into a self-guided gallery tour. Use the mobile pass to check in at pieces and unlock prizes along the way. It's a great excuse to get outside and explore Downtown block by block.
6. Fort Wayne School of Art
Formerly Vanderhorst Art Studio, Fort Wayne School of Art is a cozy, art-filled space offering classes and workshops for kids and adults alike. From paint nights and sketch workshops to birthday parties and classes for homeschool kids, this colorful studio provides everyone a hands-on approach to making art and channeling your own creativity.
7. Hobnobben Film Festival
Fort Wayne's only independent film festival returns October 22-25 for its 11th year. Expect films from independent filmmakers around the world, plus homegrown and student talent, screened Downtown at Cinema Center. It's an easy way to catch stories and voices you won't find at the multiplex, and with its panels and Q&As, it’s a great way to delve deeper into the art of filmmaking.
8. Three Rivers Music Theatre

Founded in 2016 by Fort Wayne native Andy Planck, Three Rivers Music Theatre has built a reputation for bold, inclusive storytelling. And this season, they're marking their 10th anniversary with a lineup that includes HAIR, POTUS, and GYPSY. TRMT is known for tackling stories that don't always get told on other local stages, backed by a genuine commitment to inclusion both on stage and behind the scenes.
