DTFW’s Guide to Happy Hour

Looking to enjoy some of the best Happy Hour spots in the city? Here’s our guide to Happy Hour in DTFW!

July 2024 marked a new era for Indiana bars and restaurants—the era of Happy Hour! It’s a tradition celebrated globally, albeit under different names, like aperitivo in Italy or nomikai in Japan. And it’s far more than just “a sale on drinks and appetizers.” The tradition is about building community and camaraderie by gathering over drinks and shareable food. It’s often celebrated by colleagues or friends after the workday, but it can be enjoyed by anyone looking to build closer connections—that includes family, lovers, even strangers.

Since 1985, Happy Hour has been banned throughout the state in an effort to reduce drinking and driving. The new law signed by former governor Eric Holcolm does have its safety restrictions to help limit overconsumption and it encourages establishments to serve responsibly, but it effectively ends the decades-old ban.

If you’re looking to partake in Happy Hour, Downtown Fort Wayne is the best place to imbibe (or if you’re not drinking, you can choose from plenty of zero-proof options popping up all over town). DTFW’s 99 blocks are bustling with some of the most esteemed bars and eateries in town, and everything is clustered together with plenty of pedestrian-friendly walkways—making it a safer destination to walk to and from establishments. And with DORA, you can even take Happy Hour on-the-go!

While we’re on the topic, here’s a little Public Safety Announcement: Keep Happy Hour happy, and Downtown Fort Wayne safe for everyone. Remember, for each drink you consume, wait an additional hour before driving. (More time to socialize and eat? Yes, please!) But if time is limited, always have safe rides for you and everyone else. Rideshare splitting is easier than ever, or if you don’t drink, offer to be the designated driver! Final note: Designated driver is an important job, and we should all thank them accordingly.
